Citation is now a first-class metric

Two decades of SEO revolved around one question: "What position am I in?" Position, clicks, conversions. Now users don't search—they ask ChatGPT, get summaries from Perplexity. On these platforms there is no "position." There is citation. Attribution. Being listed as a source.

Measurement infrastructure: API + probe query set

You can't manually check LLM citations. Test 50 queries by hand daily and bias is inevitable. Build an automated probe system. OpenAI API, Anthropic API, Google AI Studio API—all provide programmatic access. Perplexity has no public API yet, but web scraping works (in compliance with ToS).

The probe query set is critical. Brand keywords + category keywords + long-tail combinations. Write data to BigQuery. Daily snapshots. Examine weekly trends. If citation rate drops, revisit content strategy. If you never appear in a particular model, you're absent from that model's training data—produce fresh content and wait.

Position and context: citation quality metrics

Citation rate alone isn't enough. Appearing as one of ten sources differs from being the first. You need a Citation Position metric. Perplexity typically shows 3–5 sources. If you're fifth, your click odds are ~10%. If you're first, ~40%. Measure this data.
